Last week I decided to sell almost all my gear and I have to admit that I feel pretty naked now. I took that drastic step for mainly two reasons. The first, economic and logistic reason is that the upcoming move to the US will be stressful enough and I wanted to minimize the amount of stuff that could get broken in the process of moving. The second reason is a more fundamental one I guess: I was not sure anymore that I was not acquiring new gear because on some subconscious level I believed it will make me a better photographer.
So the only cameras I kept are an Olympus E-PM1, the X100, and my Leica M6 + Summicron which is probably still quite significant. However I am almost only using the Olympus at the moment. The X100 has a really annoying hot pixel and shooting the M6, while really amazing, is quite expensive with about 0,80 Euro per shot or about 8 Euros for really good ones if you assume a ratio of 1/10 (which is rather optimistic). Of course I left myself the option open to buy a Canon 5D MkIII + glass once I am in the US in fall but at this point I am doubting that I will be doing it; for different reasons however: I am sick of heavy gear – small is beautiful.
I will let you know how my catharsis pans out…
Did you sell your NEX 5D already? The weblink “selling most of my gear” was posted 3 hours ago but your blog leads me to believe you’ve already sold everything.
Hey Greg, the 5n is gone as well. I loved this camera body and in particular with the Leica glass… very nice.
